Welcome to the first highlights letter for The Obscured!

When I set up The Obscured, I wanted it to be a publication that was open to everyone, where anyone could write about their deepest fears and feelings and explore their mental and physical health without being judged. The works we publish in the Obscured are all about making the unknown known.

I am so happy that this seems to be a publication people want to writer for and read — already we’ve got over 70 followers, so thank you!

We’ve already had a wide variety of pieces published in The Obscured, across a variety of formats and topics — from poetry and therapy writings to personal essays and self-help articles — and I’d love to just highlight some of our most popular pieces.

Popular pieces:

“Faith & Mental Health” by Johnzelle Anderson

The Account: a synopsis of my pain (therapy writing)” by Nyaalo Mia

“I am a Jade Rabbit” by Katherine Grace

“5 Ways to Survive a Panic Attack at Work” by Johnzelle Anderson

“I’m Uneducated” by Laura Fox

“Why I Regretted Being Honest About My Mental Health” by Madeline Dyer

“Skin Crawling — or a poem about waiting for my new ptsd meds to start helping” by Katherine Grace

“Depression is a Thief” by Ashley Peterson

“Why I’m Sharing My Story With Autoimmune Encephalitis” by Madeline Dyer

“I’m Quitting Caffeine…Again” by Johnzelle Anderson

“Pull the Plug on Performance Anxiety” by Dan Murray-Serter

Unlearning Bravery” by Laura Fox

“Exposure Therapy is Both the Best and Worse Thing I Can Do For My OCD” by Madeline Dyer

We’re still looking for more writers for The Obscured too!

Types of pieces The Obscured is interested in:

  • first-hand accounts of mental health issues (including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and PTSD)
  • first-hand accounts of physical illnesses and how these affect you
  • personal essays where you talk about your feelings — this can be on any topic, for example, anything that’s worrying you
  • thoughts on recovery and treatment
  • therapy writing and recovery writing (can be in the form of poetry or fiction — but please make it clear it is therapy writing)
  • letters written to your illness or another person about your illness/your inner-most thoughts
  • things you wish other people understood about you and your illness
  • anything to do with how you are feeling or things you wouldn’t normally talk about for fear of stigma-related backlash
  • advice for improving mental health and wellbeing

The Obscured is all about giving a voice to topics that are traditionally not talked about, feelings that are unknown to those around you.
