We are Underreacting to Everything

And democracy is on the line.

So yeah, Trump is openly flouting the courts now, even if only in spirit. He’s using a little-used law from the 18th century to do it, which is controversial for a wide variety of reasons, and he doesn’t seem keen on stopping his disregard for rule of law.

The barrage of Executive Orders with varying degrees of illegality, the various Cabinet leaders slashing and burning the government agencies they’ve been tasked with leading, and the Republican-led congress just…giving up their check-and-balance powers are just the tip of the iceberg. He’s giving blanket pardons to people who took part in the January 6, 2021 coup attempt, disappearing people to prison camps for practicing their First Amendment rights to free speech and demonstration, and doing anything he can to undermine both Biden’s work achievements and personal life.

And, when various lawsuits and court orders put dampers on his plans, they just dig in and either continue their dismantling in other areas or, as above, just ignore said court orders.

The Republican-led congress, which is meant to be a check on presidential power, is currently absent from that duty. While they theoretically have the “power of the purse,” the ability to allocate and spend government funds, they’re just letting Trump and his…
