“Possession” (1981) Is A Surreal Exploration of Marriage, Divorce and Getting Railed By A Tentacle Beast

It would be unfair to reduce this movie to its mere body horror elements or dismiss it as cheap titillation. Andrzej Zulawski and Frederic Tuten created a compelling and unique portrayal, both literal and symbolic, of an imploding marriage and any honest discussion of the movie would do we — AHAHAHA no OBVIOUSLY we’re going to talk about how a woman has sex with an octopus monster in this movie.
The surface plot of the film is fairly simple. Mark, played by Sam Neill, is an agent of some sort who has just returned from a year-long espionage mission away from his family. They are residing in West Berlin during the latter years of the Cold War. He informs his superiors that he is quitting for his family’s sake, then returns home to be confronted by his wife, demanding a divorce. Mark leaves, but his wife’s increasingly hysteric and erratic behavior results in him moving back in to care for Bob while she flits in and out of their lives. Mark may or may not fuck her best friend Margie, and definitely fucks Bob’s teacher who is a dead ringer for his wife…and also played by the same actress. At one point her lover Heinrich enters the scene. During their first meeting, he beats the living hell out of Mark. Sometime thereafter he…
