Disappointed But Not Surprised: Campaign Week 0

Sorting through the unexpected but actually very expected trash of the week.

--

Welcome to Disappointed But Not Surprised, where we catalogue the events of the past week which reminded us of how trash Australian politics is, and how detached from reality our political class is.

Each week we award the biggest disappointment of the week the Malcolm Turnbull Compromising On His Principles Award, in honour of the man who did the most in stoking DBNS culture within Australian politics.

Without further ado, here are the winners from this week, which technically wasn’t a full week of campaign, but everyone kind of acted like it was anyway.

Dishonourable Mentions

The ALP memes itself trying to get with the kids

It’s obviously in Labor’s best interests to get young people enrolled to vote — that age bracket is usually more progressive, so will likely mean more votes for the party.

Unfortunately, they’re not going to get those votes if they put out content like this:

Someone really likes Fergie

When ALP Spicy Meme Stash exists, I don’t know why they decide to use 30-year-old media managers to make *youth* content but it’s their funeral.

The Libs snap a vertebrae in the biggest of backflips

The week started with the Liberal party coming for the ALP over their electric car policy, claiming Labor was bringing about “the end of the weekend” through their policy of 50% of new car sales to be electric vehicles by 2030.

Even more moderate Liberals like Josh Frydenberg and Tim Wilson joined in the beat up, claiming the policy had “Communist undertones”, even though they actually supported electric cars.

But then everyone realised that Liberals were now just contradicting themselves from 6 months ago.

The Libs haven’t come out and reversed their stance, but they have gone particularly quiet over the issue. We’ll just have to see if they change their minds again any time soon.

Runner-Up

Conservatives don’t understand how satire works

This week saw one of the weirdest campaigns I’ve ever seen for an election launched: Captain GetUp

I have never cringed harder than I have watching this video.

However, this isn’t being run by the left-wing lobby group GetUp. This is actually a campaign run by conservative group Advance Australia who are trying to use it to point out their issues with GetUp.

Confused yet? You’re not alone

Yet despite the immediate memeing by anyone with half a brain, Advance Australia think that the launch went well.

Boy am I looking forward to see what new sweet hell they come up with next.

Winner

Scott Morrison thinks all Asians look the same

This weeks winner is none other than our Prime Minister, who managed to fuck up the most basic of social interactions by not realising that not all Asians speak Chinese:

Dear god it’s not even been a full week of campaigning and I’m already tired of it. It’s going to be a long election
