Blink and You’ll Miss ’Em №1
Jim Ford
What is, “Blink and You’ll Miss ‘Em”?
This particular thread aims to illuminate some of the artists who released only a few albums during their lifetime.
By few, I mean no more than three. Three studio albums to be specific.
Live albums and compilations don’t advance the artistic vision, they merely enhance it.
Why three?
Because their first album, however magnificent it is, does no more than announce an artist’s arrival to the world.
With their second (sometimes called the ‘difficult’ second) album, they have the opportunity to confirm that their first one was no fluke.
This is where they get to slay the dragon called one-hit-wonder. Assuming they’re lucky enough for their first to have been a hit.
Finally, their third album is where everyone, them and us, gets to experience their talent blossoming as their potential begins to be fully realised.
Some were never that lucky
Some of those now now-revered cornerstones of modern popular music never got as far as three albums.
Hank Williams, dead at 29, released only two during his short lifetime.
