6 Tips to Start Living Your Best Life

Taken by Seneca Dunmore on the Cape of South Africa

The only person stopping you from living life to the fullest is..you.

2016 has been a year for the books. Being a full-time business owner for the first time this year, I’ve been privileged to be able to say “It’s possible because I’ve done it.” No, I didn’t quit my job. No, I didn’t get fired. No, I didn’t have the chatter of a thousand mouths telling me what I should do. I simply allowed my life to follow the path that was set for it long before I was born. And that path led me exactly where I am today, loving the life I have and living the life I love.

I speak with individuals on a daily basis that struggle with simply loving their lives. Either they don’t make enough money, or they are tired of being single. Either they don’t feel fulfilled by their jobs or they are tired of feeling as if life has no real purpose. In all of the exciting adventuring I’ve done this year, I’ve still had moments where I felt dissatisfied with where I was in life, especially when I looked at people around me who seemed to be doing more and doing better than I was.

While no two situations are the same but there are a few fundamental rules one can follow to get out of “stuck” mode and into “go” mode…and today, I’d like to share them in hopes of helping the next person start 2017 out with purpose.

1. Start each day being thankful for the life you have.

With the hustle and bustle of life always humming on, it can get a little hard to see things for what they are. No matter how hectic, crazy, or tumultuous life may seem, the fact of the matter is…it could always be worse! Think about it (and this is a biggie), there is another soul out there wishing they had the problems you had! You may wish you had a new car and someone else is praying that had a car. You may say that your living space is “too small” while there are people living under bridges. If you’re like me, you hate when your alarm wakes you up…and someone else who had plans for today took their last breath during the night. Putting things into perspective makes for a thankful heart. I can guarantee if you count the blessings you do have, you’ll soon forget about the things you THINK you lack.

2. Stop searching for your purpose and allow your purpose to find you.

One question that’s Googled the most is “How do you find your life’s purpose?” Now, this tells me one thing: people are living life without reason. That is a scary thing. I can’t say that I’ve ever been on a search specifically to find my purpose but I have had days where I thought to myself “There has to be more to life than THIS…” Guess what, there was and is more, I just had to slow down long enough to allow that “more’” to reveal itself to me. I had to get busy doing the things I loved, many of which included helping others discover what they love to do and brainstorming ways for them to generate income in doing so. I started sharing more and more about how my life was transformed when I made up my mind to stop settling for less and lack. I started inspiring others to be great. It was in my love for helping others that my own purpose found me and locked me down. Just get busy helping and serving others and your purpose will manifest itself.

3. Silence the noise.

I can say this (and I bet thousands would agree), social media is one of the loudest distractions out there. While as a business owner, millennial, and social butterfly, social media is a must for me, I find that it is easy to get sidetracked getting lost in scrolling and tapping. The “FOMO” or “fear of missing out” has many of us by the throats. We get more concerned about what’s going on in the world around us that we lose sight of what’s going on IN us. Social media isn’t the only distraction — spending time with people who do not add value to our lives, taking too much time to have “fun” and not work, or just not doing the things that have priority in our lives, are all distractions. Moving forward, in order to live a life that you love, you have to get focused on the things that truly matter to you.

4. Be mindful of how you spend your time.

Time is our greatest gift…we never know when our time here on Earth will run out. Even with utilizing a daily planner, time escapes us. So many times I’ve found myself wondering “Where did the day go?” I didn’t cross anything off my to-do list. I didn’t do this or that…I just didn’t do! How many times has this happened to you too? I like to say that wasted time is worse than wasted money because you can get money back. Each and every day you wake up, make a conscious effort not to waste one minute of your day. Taking a few minutes to relax and regroup is one thing, taking 5 hours binging on Netflix is another (guilty as charged..haha!).

5. Stop comparing your life to others.

This concept goes back to tip one. The life you have is just that…IT’S YOURS! You were uniquely created and the path you’ve been placed on is specific to your wants, needs, and desires. You have the free-will to do with it as you please. Watching others travel their paths while you stand still on yours is the things that are keeping you from thriving! There will always be someone who is prettier, more handsome, smarter, taller, shorter wealthier or less fortunate, than you. Your position isn’t to figure out “why” but rather to focus on how amazingly great you are! Think about this, we all have a set of unique fingerprints and no one person can say they have the same prints as you. That’s HUGE! Again, stop looking around and start looking within. You are great in your own right.

6. Take each day one day at a time.

Listen, I know it’s hard to think about what you have going on now when you’re always being told to plan for your next. But sometimes, it’s so much easier and less stressful to slow down and take life one day at a time. You reach goals by working towards them set by step. It’s the same with life. Trying to do everything will leave you ultimately doing nothing.

Do not let 2017 start with you stuck in 2016. A new year is always a great time to start over and do the things you’ve always wanted to do. 2017 will be filled with opportunities and so many doors will open for you IF you desire to move forward with your life. Your life has a plan. Your life has a purpose. Get ready to live your purposed life starting today and carrying over to 2017!
