It is my belief that true happiness is not rooted in how successful you are, but how fulfilled you are. Fulfillment is synonymous with satisfaction, achievement, and accomplishment. You can make a lot of money and have millions of followers on social media and still not feel fulfilled. The beating of our hearts give us life, but walking in purpose and making an impact in the lives of others is what makes us alive.

I have encountered a number of people recently, many of them Christians, who are clueless as to their purpose. How is it that we have a relationship with the creator yet remain clueless as to why we were created? Fulfillment comes when we are clear about who we are, whose we are, and why we are. Below are 7 steps that I believe will help you in your journey to living a more fulfilled life.

  1. Find your purpose [in God]. Purpose gives us a vision for our lives. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” What that means is that you will start to truly live once you start walking in purpose and you will no longer feel like you’re wondering aimlessly. We can not find our purpose in a book or in another person, we must find it in God alone.
  2. Disconnect from toxic and draining relationships. Relationships can either help or hinder us. If a relationship is not producing any fruit, meaning it’s not beneficial or helpful, then it’s useless. Why continue to nurture relationships that are literally sucking all the life out of you? Kick dysfunction out so that fulfillment can enter in.
  3. Stop comparing yourself to other people. You can’t live a fulfilled life when you want what others have. It is okay to look to others for inspiration but that’s it. Inspiration should make you want to become a better you, not become someone else.
  4. Accept where you are. Yes, you read that correctly. What I am referring to is contentment, not complacency. Work towards better but also embrace where you are. Some of the most important lessons are learned in the journey to becoming the best version of ourselves. Your now has purpose.
  5. Believe that better is possible. You have to change the internal dialogue you have with yourself about your future. Often times, we profess faith while hoarding doubt in our hearts. You not only have to believe that better is possible, but it’s possible for you. According to Mark 9:23, “Everything is possible to the one who believes.”
  6. Stop settling for less than you deserve. When you truly know that you have a purpose and that better is possible, you will stop settling for less than you’re worth. Impatience can also cause us to settle because we accept what is available rather than wait for what we really want and deserve.
  7. Finish what you start. Procrastination is the arch nemesis of your progress. There’s nothing more fulfilling than checking things off your to-do list and getting things done. Make a commitment to seeing things through to the end. Your integrity hinges upon your ability to make good on your word. If you say you will do something, do it and do it exceptionally well.
