Sly was so broke he sold his wife’s jewellery and ended up sleeping in a bus station. He was so low he sold his beloved dog for a measly $25.
Desperate and destitute, Stallone’s fortunes changed when he watched a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Inspired, he poured his heart into a script, writing for 20 hours straight.
Studios loved it, offering $125,000 — a fortune for a struggling actor. But Stallone had one non-negotiable condition: he had to star as Rocky.
The studios balked. “He looked funny and talked funny,” they said. They upped their offer to $250,000, then $350,000.
Stallone stood firm. It was all or nothing.
Finally, United Artists took a chance, paying him $35,000 and letting him star. The gamble paid off spectacularly.
Rocky won three Oscars, including Best Picture, and Stallone earned a Best Actor nomination. The film was even inducted into the National Film Registry as one of the greatest ever made.
Or was this nothing more than a public relations tale cooked up by United Artists?
