The Giggly Threshold

February 12, 2016

The body has been tired this week and it’s a good thing. It’s almost muscle memory I guess — a reminder that I’ll hit the odd wall or two along the way — mental and physical — and that’s ok. We all need to rest, sit back from everything and recoup for the next step on the journey ahead.

I’ve also learnt that I hate legs. Well training them anyway. That giggly threshold you remember as a kid where you’re being told to do something and everything in you doesn’t want to, but conversely, you know you’re going to have to do it, and it’s not going to be much fun. Ugh. I’d give deadlifting an elephant a shot above lunges, squats and everything else that has any relation to exercising legs.

Such is the love, that Chris got a bit more than the usual selection of profanities in the last session of the week (sorry bout that Chris); nevermind the contortions pulled when Karen, and those healing hands of hers, started dry needling my neglected limbs not long after — horses have leapt less! (Karen equal apologies to you for the whinging!)

All that shenanigans aside it’s also been a good week; I finally let the proverbial cat out of the bag and the covers came off the One Wild Ride website, social media channels and plans. It might seem trivial, but it was important to release it all into the wild at a point where I felt it could fend for itself. Sailing a small boat around the country may be an endearing idea but also the kind of notion that some people might expect me to have had after a few pints in the local on a Friday evening! The reality has been very different. While there have been the days I’ve baulked at the distance, or pondered the physicality of this challenge, the team and I have been honest with ourselves, and given due time to consider the things that will genuinely matter. The information on the website should speak for itself in that regard.

All things considered, the one defining experience this week again revolves around the growing support and energy everyone has shown toward the One Wild Ride idea. There are many of you out there, and for your feedback, kind words and commitment to the cause — thank you. It makes a big difference to know you’re right behind us.

Now enough reading and writing for all of us — it’s Friday evening and I’m researching the nutritional value of a well-deserved glass of vino. Just the one mind — there’s a job to do in May!
