Net Neutrality, also referred as Open Internet, means consumers can go where they want, when they want. In other words, everyone has an equal chance to succeed without effect or threat from another website or company.

Over the summer, on June 14 2016, A federal court of appeals fully upholds the FCC’s strong net neutrality rule, recognizing that an open internet is essential for innovation and economic growth and flashback to Oct. 29 2007, Then-Senator Barack Obama pledges support for net neutrality to protect a free and open Internet if elected President. After almost a decade of that promise, the country has finally come into agreement on the fairness of the internet. The internet is evolving in its way of processing the information and showcasing it to the world. The concept of Net Neutrality not only relates to how our business world has changed, but also the social and political change, as President Obama describes the 4 million people supporting a free and fair internet and asking for a change as being the backbone of democracy. The success of the Net Neutrality rule thus is a collective effort of the group: the protestors and supporters who strongly believe in the necessity for an open environment online.

President Obama’s message on encouraging a free and fair internet. By The White House.

Why should I care? Net Neutrality prevents the big guys from taking full control of the market, and that affects my daily life. For example, I created a non-profit organic coffee company to support the funding of charity in my school. Under Net Neutrality, my non-profit has an equal chance of popping up on the search engine when you type “coffee” as Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. This prevents the big guys from always coming above the little guys. In the long term, my non-profit is not likely to vanish. Neutrality therefore contributes to the success of the entrepreneurs and enables the creative ideas in Shark Tank and normal people to come into real life.

Net Neutrality ensures consumers and businesses have access to a fast, fair, and open Internet. Net Neutrality impacts every parts of our lives. Imagine a word without filter. You can see different parts of the world. The world that is colorful, vibrant, and inclusive.
