7 Must-Read Books for Every Writer in 2023
The 7 best books on writing I have read as a top writer on Medium
--
A dear friend once told me that most writers don’t read.
I won’t lie, it was a rather strange realization for me. And I found it hard to believe. Personally, my identity as a writer is just as much tied to the fact that I write, as it is to the fact that I make time to read, daily.
But if what he said is remotely true, I wonder how many writers even bother to read about writing.
If you are reading this I am assuming that you are the exception. The fact that you are curious to know what books on writing you can actually read proves that.
And I celebrate you! You are special and you are definitely different.
Without wasting much of your time. Here are 7 books I would recommend to all writers around the world.
NUMBER 1: STORYWORTHY: ENGAGE TEACH, PERSUADE, AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE BY MATTHEW DICKS
This, in my opinion, is your ultimate guide for learning the art of captivating storytelling.
Matthew Dicks writing style is laid-back and humorous. He shares a lot of personal stories throughout the book that drive the lessons home. I love how he not only teaches the art of storytelling but shows you practically how to capture and curate your own stories.
If you want to learn how to become a better storyteller, or better still, if you want to learn how to find and trap your stories, I recommend you read his book.
NUMBER 2: THE ART AND BUSINESS OF ONLINE WRITING BY NICOLAS COLE
This is the go-to book for those looking to master the art and business of online writing.
This was the first ever book on writing I ever read as a writer. For a long time, it was all I needed. For my first few years as a newbie writer, I didn't need any other writing book. Implementing the knowledge I gleaned from this book led me to make my first dime online.
Nicolas Cole is a veteran in the game and he knows his onions.
If this is the only book on writing you ever read, you can rest assured that you have made a great investment in yourself and your growth as a writer.
NUMBER 3: THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE BY WILLIAM STRUNK JR. AND E.B. WHITE
I have done a couple of researches on “books all writers should read” and 80% of the time this book is on the list of different writers.
What this means is that 8 out of every 10 writers that have read this book agree that all writers should read it.
I love that it is concise and the ideas are easy to implement.
This is the book to read if you are looking to improve your grammar and your writing overall.
NUMBER 4: WORD POWER MADE EASY BY NORMAN LEWIS
One of the greatest investments you can make in yourself as a writer is building a strong and robust vocabulary.
Norman Lewis in his book, explains how the average person learns fewer and fewer words as they grow older. He teaches, in his book, the most effective ways to improve your vocabulary fast.
His book is a must-read for every writer that desires to build a superior vocabulary.
NUMBER 5: WRITER BUSINESS MODEL BY CATEGORY PIRATES
Most writers understand the art of writing, but few understand the business side of writing.
If you are stuck wondering how you can turn your writing skill into a profitable business model this is the book for you.
Category Pirates is made up of seasoned veterans with years of experience in the business aspect of writing.
NUMBER 6: THE ENEMY IS INCONSISTENCY: HOW TO BECOME A CONSISTENT WRITER BY BENAIAH BERTHRAN
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got as a newbie writer is to write daily.
One of the things that stop most writers from becoming the best at their craft is their inability to develop daily writing habits.
The Enemy is Consistency is a book for all writers struggling with writing consistently every day.
NUMBER 7: SHOW YOUR WORK BY AUSTIN KLEON
“In this day and age, if your work isn’t online, it doesn’t exist.” — Austin Kleon
This is the book timid and frightened writers who are scared to put out their work need to conquer their fears and show their work to the world.
Kleon encourages you to view sharing as a learning process. Your work does not have to be perfect to share it.
Create, share, teach, learn, and improve on the go.
There you have it!
If you have been looking for a book to read on writing you can pick anyone on this list and you would have made a very good choice.
