When I first learned how to set goals, I discovered many interesting ways to accomplish them.

Of course, setting SMART goals was at the top of the list, but there was one aspect I kept ignoring.

That was having an accountability partner.

I came across different books, podcasts, videos, social media, and other sources telling how important accountability partners are.

It was a recurring subject, but I always wondered if it was necessary.

I used to question the need for an accountability partner. After all, I considered myself disciplined and didn’t need to be accountable to anyone.

I soon discovered that while discipline is valuable, there are moments when frustration and a lack of motivation could set in.

Everything would feel overwhelming, and it could be challenging to get back on track.

Now that’s when having an accountability partner becomes important.

Who is an accountability partner?

An accountability partner is someone you trust and can be honest with. Someone who helps you stay committed to achieving your goals.

This person holds you by the hand and provides a source of motivation, guidance, and encouragement.

It could be a mentor, a friend, a family member, or anyone committed to helping you achieve your goals.

Benefits of accountability partners.

It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. And if one falls down, the other helps, but if there’s no one to help, tough! — Ecclesiastics 4:9 MSG.

Having someone to support you throughout life’s journey is so important. An accountability partner is here to:

  1. Keep you motivated
  2. Help you stay on track
  3. Help you plan and strategize
  4. Push you beyond your limits
  5. Provide support and advice

How do you choose an accountability partner?

Finding a partner can be challenging sometimes, but here are 4 things to look out for in a partner.

1. Choose someone with similar goals.

If you’re trying to lose weight, partner with someone who wants to lose weight or has gone through that before. Having similar goals will provide support and motivation for both parties.

2. Choose someone you can be honest with

It is easy to lie about your progress to your partner. Choose a partner with whom you feel comfortable sharing your progress and challenges. Honesty is key here; it creates an environment where your partner can effectively support you.

3. Choose a partner who is dedicated and committed.

To help you, your partner must first commit to their own goals. If they are dedicated, they are more likely to support you and help you stay on track.

4. Choose someone you respect

When you have someone you hold in high esteem, you won’t want to disappoint or let them down, and because of this, you will always strive to achieve your goals.

If you want to take a step closer to achieving your goals, look out for these four things in a partner and choose someone you can be accountable to.
