Affirmations Don’t Work

Affirmations don’t work. If they did, we wouldn’t be having conversations on how to get out of — or into — situations we want to happen. Repeating an affirmative slogan for the gain of anything is still more of the same noise within, but with a positive spin.

Affirmations don’t work. If they did, there would be no disease, heartache, homelessness, war, or hunger. The idea that repeating a mantra for either spiritual or material gain still comes from a belief that something is wrong, that life isn’t working, and that things are just not right. So we believe that thinking it away with positive, affirmative words will erase the writing on the wall that our life sucks.

My 8-year-old niece, Rey, and I were walking back from the beach one afternoon, and suddenly, she began to tell me about “opposite land” — a land where everything was the opposite of what we see. She liked the opposite land because her imagination soared. She told me she could imagine something different from what was happening. Rey saw beyond appearances; she was childlike in her perception. And that’s what we’re asked to do as adults.
