“I’m so sorry. If only Ida done more, you would have been fine.” “If only Ida fixed this before, this tragedy would have never happened!”

Some people go to the end of their Human Experience nursing regrets and having wishes unfulfilled. I call these people “If only Ida” people.

“If only Ida” is short for If only I would have done something differently, this wouldn’t have happened. It is, many times, about circumstances that were way beyond their control, anyway.

We see this, many times, especially in children whose parents are going through a divorce. They believe that, if they had only done more or acted better, this would have never happened.

And the children feel guilt and shame for “causing” the parents to divorce. And this guilt and shame many times lasts for a long, long time, affecting their entire lives.

And many of these children carry this into their adult years where it continues to cause problems.

This brings us back to the age-old thought that many have that if they had only acted differently when something bad happened, even the most horrible of actions, and this is true.
