When I talk about crap food, I’m not just talking about processed rubbish; I’m talking about Calorie Rich And Processed food. CRAP is an acronym first coined by Jeff Novick, a nutritionist.

You know that processed foods contribute to obesity, I don’t need to ram that point home, but I’d like to dig a little deeper into why processed food is so bad for you.

Why processed food is so bad for you

You know that all calories aren’t equal. Still, the food industry would like us to believe that ‘the overconsumption of calories from carrots would be no different from overconsumption of calories from soda’, and if a calorie is just a calorie, why does it matter where they come from?

Dr Michael Greger says that if you look at the example of carrots versus coca cola, in a controlled laboratory setting, 240 calories from carrots, which is just ten carrots, would have the same effect on calorie balance as the 240 calories in a bottle of coke. But outside the laboratory, the effects are very different. How long would it take you to drink the calories in a coca cola?

Less than a minute?

But eating ten carrots might take over two hours of constant chewing. Two hundred forty calories of…
