Maya picked her tooth off the bathroom floor; It was the fourth tooth she had lost in two years of her marriage. Her husband, Greg, was sprawled on the cheap thin rug spread across the tiny space that served as the living room.

Greg wasn’t always like this. Maya smiled dryly as she remembered the first time they held hands. She could have sworn time stopped. He was everything to her. But then they got married and she realized too late that it was all an illusion. She had seen what she chose to see and ignored the glaring Truth: Greg was a monster. She shuffled her feet towards him and picked up a cushion that had been thrown down during their scuffle. She moved to replace it on the settee when she stilled. She turned towards Greg, he was passed out cold. Somewhere deep down on her mind her grandmother’s words echoed, “when life gives you lemons.."

Maya gripped the cushion tightly in both hands and stepped towards Greg.
