What Every Great Artist Does Better Than Anyone Else
You may hold this power without even knowing
I love watching cinematic videos. They always make me feel something I have never felt before. Seeing nature from different corners of the world, in various phases of life brings so much peace. It takes a true artist to capture those specific moments and put them side by side so they would create a story.
You could never explain a feeling, right? But as an artist, you can arrange the perfect environment which would orchestrate a person’s heart to recreate that particular feeling. People behind true masterpieces somehow knew it. They didn’t just know how to deliver a story but they actually knew what every inch of the story should feel like.
I love reading Ernest Hemingway. In my head, he is an admirer of beauty who accepted ugliness without trying to portray ugly as beautiful. If we look at his famous novella ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, we can notice many different states. There is desperation and humility with the smell of the sea and the sound of old rotten wood. There is an exhausting struggle that clears out all unnecessary stuff. There are stormy grey clouds of burden and rays of hope. Of course, those are just a few things I could try to put into words but you could find so many of them. It made me realize that he knew those feelings like no one else. He had situations in his life that made him feel all of that. Then, he had the courage to sink into them, to let them in. And after that, revisit them times and times again to recreate all those sensations in the reader’s soul. Probably it was painful to revisit his past so many times, but that’s what it takes to write something people wouldn’t want to forget.
If you are an artist, that sensation you might have in your chest, back, or arms or that 0.05-sec flashback you would love to never get is your greatest gift. Perhaps there are people walking this Earth who need to feel what you feel right now. Or maybe they need to know that someone else knows the same feeling.
So, if you’re going through what seems like a never ending dark tunnel, maybe, it is not because you did something wrong. It is not the universe torturing you. What if you are in the process of becoming an artist?
