If you’re a bootstrapped startup working in Gastown in need of some cheap eats, this list is for you! With the help of our members and alumni, who are highly experienced in the department of tasty food hacks, we created a top 10 list of restaurants with the most bang for your buck.

1. Caveman

Caveman is a Gastown gemstone. The food is tasty, portions are massive, and they offer a wide variety of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Caveman can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want to make it so you can choose a meal that fits the healthiness you desire. This spot is also great for picky eaters since you get to choose most of the ingredients in your burger, burrito, or salad.

2. T&T Supermarket

Suggested by Tastory, Victory Square Technologies, CoPilot

Check out T&T’s pre-packaged Asian Fusion meals, cheap take-out sushi, or hot boxed lunch with your favourite BBQ meats. You can even grab Bubble Tea on the way out for as low as $1.99 (Pro Tip: request half sweetened)

3. Sushi Den

Suggested by Silota, Lighthouse Lab

If you’re looking for a sushi joint that’s affordable and serves quality Japanese food, look no further. You can find it all at Sushi Den: Sushi rolls, fresh sashimi, teriyaki rice bowls all for an affordable price.

4. Pholicious

Suggested by TalentMarketplace, Perception

This spot is an all-time favourite for a rainy day lunch. For 10 dollars or less, Pholicious will warm your soul with its hot noodle soups, steaming rice, and hearty sandwiches. If that’s not enough, for an dollar extra, you can get a combo with a pop.

5. Einstein Wrap House

Suggested by CoPilot, Perception

These guys are the Gastown Kings of Shwarmas and Donairs. This spot is not only delicious but also extremely quick, so if you’re in a time crunch but want to pack in a quick lunch, this is the spot.

6. Costco

Suggested by TalentMarketplace

I don’t need to elaborate too much on Costco. For $1.50, you get a hot dog and an unlimited refillable pop! If you ever get tired of this amazing deal, they also have sandwiches and poutine for about $5. BONUS: They have soft served ice cream!

7. Kyzock

Suggested by Victory Square Technologies

In my opinion, everything tastes better in a bowl, but Kyzock takes it to the next level. If you’re sitting at work feeling bored and hungry, go get yourself a Spicy Tuna Bowl and you will be brought back to life. Most of their bowls are under $10, and you simply can’t find authentic Japanese food made at that price anywhere else.

8. Nesters

Suggested by Sredio, Perception

If sandwiches, soups and salads are your cup of tea, Nesters offers a variety of options that are freshly made daily with a friendly price tag. Since Nesters is a supermarket they also offer a variety of snacks, beverages, and desserts which allow you to change things up and add a little something special to your lunch.

9. Bali Thai

Suggested by Victory Square Technologies

If you’re looking for an authentic Indonesian meal, you have come to the right place. They offer flavourful traditional dishes that are cheap and incredibly hard to pronounce. Some even claim this spot is the best restaurant at the International Village food court!

10. Warehouse

Suggested by TalentMarketplace, Tastory

This spot is famous for having a menu where everything is under $5.95. Options ranges from appetizers like wings and fries to entrees like burgers and pasta. As long as you don’t go nuts on condiments and add ons, you won’t break the bank.

These are some of our favourites but there are tons of other great options in Gastown so take some time to venture out and explore! We hope this inspired you to try out new spots in Gastown and maybe initiate some networking lunches with fellow entrepreneurs.

Bon Appetit!
