ITALY BECOMES THE FIRST COUNTRY TO BAN FAKE MEAT AS SALES PLUMIT.
Italy has made history as the first country in the world to ban the production and sale of lab-grown meat, a move hailed by the nation’s leading agricultural lobby, Coldiretti.
Referring to lab-grown meat as “Frankenstein” meat, Coldiretti emphasized that the new law is a firm commitment to defend the traditional Mediterranean diet and the country’s rich culinary heritage. The ban reflects a broader resistance to synthetic food products and a strong preference for natural and locally sourced ingredients.
Recently, Beyond Meat, a prominent producer of fake meat has seen its market capitalization plummet from over $9 billion in 2019 to just $440 million today.
Its share prices have similarly declined, dropping from over $240 per share to $6.65. Italy’s bold stance underscores the growing tensions between innovative food technologies and traditional agricultural practices, setting a precedent that could influence global food policy.
