PUTIN: GMO BAN NECESSARY TO SAFEGUARD RUSSIA’S FOOD SECURITY

President Vladimir Putin signed a Federal Law banning the cultivation of genetically engineered plants and the breeding of genetically engineered animals in Russia. Putin emphasized that this measure is essential to safeguard the nation’s food security.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture supported the move, citing the emergence of new risks and threats to food security linked to economic sanctions as a critical factor in their decision.

The law is part of a broader national strategy outlined in the Doctrine of Food Security, which includes key provisions to prevent the import and distribution of genetically modified organisms for planting. It also prohibits raising and breeding animals with engineered genetic codes or artificial genetic material.

This comprehensive approach aims to fortify Russia’s self-sufficiency in food production and maintain the integrity of its agricultural sector against external pressures and potential biotechnological risks.
