WHEN WELL LAID PLANS FAIL……

Welcome to this book to blog series: “Climb your way out of hell”.

These articles will spur each of us to think, act and be different. To get out of this current impasse or any crisis. Successfully.

The cricket match was exciting. A clash of titans. Our rivalry was generations-old. Who cared about the prize money? It was always a fight for pride and bragging rights!

We studied their videos, assessed each of their players. We had our playbook ready. The game was on, and we invited them to bat first. We loved to chase. Our bowlers played to the plan. We restricted them to a below-par score. 220 runs, when the par was 300. Our planning, did I say, was spot on? The manager, coach, captain, vice-captain, 12th man, our ball boys — were all grinning in anticipation of our win. This was going to be a cakewalk.

You know where I am leading you, right?

Our solid openers went in to bat. And were back in the pavilion before I could say “well played”. The other two who followed them to the pitch came back equally soon. Heads hanging, chests shrunk. Tensions ran high. Our fans were shell-shocked, as were we. This was never the plan! We were supposed to breeze through and come back. Here we were though, with only 4 wickets in hand and needing 161 runs to win the match.

All plans gone awry, everyone froze. Hope and prayer seemed to be the only strategy left at the moment.

Forget victory, this was going to be a disgrace. A definite loss was staring at our face. Panic, fear, self-pity, silence. Each one of us just wanted to be left alone.

This cup was important for us to get into the next league.

Can someone tell us what to do? Can you send us a miracle?

What can we do now?

The situation is same in a football field, when you need to score 2 goals to win. You have 10 minutes on the clock. Your best player is tackled, injured and out of the field. The captain red-cards himself and is out. Your team is playing two men down, and praying for deliverance.

Two different games. Two not-so-different scenarios.

Thanks to Covid-19, aren’t we in a similar situation now? Much worse perhaps, as this is a fight for survival. Not to play another match another day, but to even live to see another day.

In other words, a fight to get out of hell.

This hell of the unknown and invisible tyrant that has played havoc with lives and business.

Is there a way out?

This is the question in my mind and yours.

The answer is YES. Don’t call me an optimist. I am a practical marketer, and I know that however difficult the situation, there is always a solution.
