In graduate school, I took a class on American Film Comedies. On the first day, the professor asked each student, “What film makes you laugh no matter how many times you’ve seen it?”

My response: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989).

Yes, after 26 years, Christmas Vacation’s animated opening credits, Cousin Eddie’s shitter, and Clark W. Griswold’s rant (ending with Bing Crosby’s tap-dancing with Danny fucking Kaye) still make me laugh. And I haven’t even mentioned my most favorite bits of dialogue, some of which are less than kosher.

In the early 1990s, I bought National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on VHS, and later, I bought it on DVD. Virtually every Christmas since then, the movie has played in the background as our family eats dinner and/or opens presents. This motion picture is probably not the most appropriate to show during so-called “family time,” but hey, when your family resembles the Griswolds…

When you think of holiday movies or TV shows, what memory comes to mind?

Share it with us, and we’ll publish the best ones. Our 9,000 readers, fans of cinema and television, would love to read it.
