Undoubtedly, films and television series can change people’s lives. Books and magazines have featured such stories for years.

Reese Witherspoon has shared how Natalie Wood’s performance in Splendor in the Grass (1961) influences her own acting. And filmmaker John Waters once explained that a line from The Wizard of Oz (1939) inspired his entire life. In fact, he sometimes repeats the dialogue as a prayer before going to sleep.

From 2010–11, The Guardian ran a similar series, informing readers, for instance, that Purple Rain’s (1984) biracial theme made actor Michael Kenneth Williams realize he “didn’t have to feel like a weirdo.” The series also revealed that actor Chiwetel Ejiofor rethought the essence of film narrative because he once watched The Bicycle Thieves (1948).

Along these lines, The Outtake is looking for stories that recount how a film or television series has changed your life. The rules:

  • Limit stories to 500 words, please.
  • Feature only ONE film or television series.
  • Italicize film/series titles and link them to their IMDB.com entry.
  • Place film’s/show’s release date(s) in parentheses the first time it’s cited.
  • SUBMIT DRAFT via email or Twitter.

Any questions, please let us know!
