I have been a gadget nerd for over two decades and hence, thought I’d share my favourite gadgets of 2020.

Apple HomePod

I picked up the Apple HomePod during the Flipkart Sale when it was available for 17000 which is 3000 less than the list price.

I have a nice pair of noise blocking earphones for the office, however once WFH began, I was on the lookout for a nice sounding speaker. I tried using the Amazon Echo 2nd generation speaker, but the sound quality was poor.

The HomePod’s sound quality is amazing and I love taking phone calls using this speaker. I have a one gripe — connecting to it from the laptop is unreliable, I have subscribed to Apple Music to which the HomePod has a direct connection to avoid this.

Having a direct integration with Spotify (which is superior to Apple Music) and the ability to be used in Zoom calls would make this a perfect device.

Apple Watch Series 6

Had been thinking about getting an Apple Watch for awhile but was worried that it would be discarded after a few days which is what has happened to the last 2 fitness bands I purchased. My wife got an Apple watch and after watching her use it, I decided to get one as well.

I wear the watch all day and have stopped carrying my phone while going out on walks. I opted for the Series 6 rather than the SE — I do not use the Blood Oxygen or ECG feature much, but I do like the always on display.

Like all Apple products, it’s a beautifully designed device. This purchase makes me a hardcore Apple fanboy — I now own an Apple Laptop, Phone, Speaker, and Watch. Expensive yes, but a pleasure to use.

Oral B Electric Toothbrush

2020 was the year that I discovered electric toothbrushes. I picked up a simple one from Oral-B during a sale and was surprised at how much better it was compared to a traditional toothbrush. I misplaced it after a few months and immediately started missing the level of cleaning that it provided.

I then ended up purchasing a more expensive Oral B PRO 2 2000 which has a couple of important features — a beeper every 30 seconds to remind you to clean a different section of your teeth and an indicator that lights up when you brush too hard.

If you have wondered what the fuss is all about, do pick up an electric toothbrush, your teeth will thank you.
