So many people say, “I have no talent for art.” When I show them my paint-pouring projects they often say, “I’d never be able to do that.” It’s surprising how many people are so afraid to try making art. I can understand their hesitation. I have felt frustration and disappointment with drawing, sketching, or painting. For example, when painting a tree, there is an expectation that it ‘should’ look a certain way. More often than not, it looks nothing like you imagined it ‘should’ look. This can keep anyone from trying art and often becomes something to avoid rather than enjoy.

Paint pouring, known as fluid art, is a mesmerizing technique that involves pouring paint onto a canvas or other surface to create unique, swirling patterns. It’s a technique that has gained popularity in recent years, thanks in part to its versatility and the fact that it doesn’t require any prior experience or training to get started. However, as with any form of self-expression, it’s natural to want to be critical of your work, especially as a beginner. But, when it comes to paint pouring, being overly critical can be detrimental to your progress and enjoyment of the technique.

Approach paint pouring with an open mind and a willingness to experiment. Unfortunately, many beginners are too critical of their initial attempts and become discouraged when their paintings don’t turn out as they had hoped. It’s important not to be too critical about their paint-pouring projects as a beginner.

Firstly, it’s essential to remember that paint pouring doesn’t have a set of hard and fast rules. This means that you have the freedom to experiment and try out different techniques without feeling constrained by tradition or rules. Unlike other art forms, there is no right or wrong way to create fluid art. It’s essential to approach the process with an open mind and not be too critical of yourself. The finished project may not turn out as expected, but the outcome is always a unique piece of art!

Secondly, recognize that paint pouring is a very unpredictable art form. Even experienced artists cannot predict what their painting will look like once the paint has dried. There are many variables at play, such as the viscosity of the paint, the surface you are pouring on, the tilt of the surface, the amount of paint you pour, and the colors you choose. All of these variables can affect the final outcome of your painting. Whether a beginner or advanced fluid artist, it’s crucial to recognize there will be times when things don’t go as planned.

All three created at the same time with the same paint and pouring technique.

One of the most beautiful things about paint pouring is the unpredictability of the results. The way the colors blend and flow together is part of the magic of the technique. Embrace imperfection and the unexpected results that come with it. It’s what makes each piece unique and special.

Thirdly, it’s essential to approach paint pouring with a growth mindset. A growth mindset means that you believe that your abilities and skills can be developed through hard work, dedication, and persistence. As a beginner, recognize that your first attempts may not be perfect, but that’s okay. Every time you pour paint, you are learning and improving your skills. Instead of being too critical of your initial attempts, view them as a learning opportunity and a chance to grow as an artist.

Both eggs done on the same day, same paints but added red to the left one. Same techique.

Any new skill takes time and practice to develop a technique and improve results. Don’t expect to create a masterpiece on your first try. It’s important to remember that experienced paint pourers started out as beginners, and had to figure out what techniques and colors work best for their style.

Paint pouring is a fun and relaxing activity that should be enjoyed for the process, not just the end result. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to create a perfect piece every time. Focus on enjoying the process and experimenting with different colors and techniques.

Paint pouring can be a therapeutic and meditative activity that allows you to disconnect from the outside world and focus on the present moment. Don’t let the pressure of creating a perfect piece take away from the relaxation and enjoyment of the process.

When you start paint pouring, keep your expectations in check and allow yourself to make mistakes. Some paintings will turn out better than others, but this is all part of the learning process. Rather than getting caught up in the outcome, focus on the journey and the joy of experimenting with different colors, techniques, and textures.

Another reason to not be too critical of your paint-pouring projects is that there are no right or wrong ways to do it. Paint pouring is all about self-expression and creativity. There’s no perfect paint-pouring project, as it’s all subjective and depends on individual taste.

It’s easy to get lost in the vast sea of beautiful paint-pouring projects on social media and feel your work doesn’t measure up. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s artistic journey is unique. Instead of playing the comparison game, focus on your personal growth and progress. Celebrate the small wins and what you learned from each painting, whether it’s a new technique you discovered or a color combination you want to try again. This mindset will help you improve your skills faster and make the entire process more enjoyable.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that art is subjective, and what may not look perfect to you may be someone else’s favorite piece. Don’t be too quick to judge your work, as others may see it differently than you do. Even if you don’t like how a particular painting turned out, it’s important to remember that each piece of art is a stepping stone to becoming a better and fulfilled artist.
