Mary Keitany

Mary Keitany cemented her place as a New York City legend by winning her fourth New York Marathon today! Keitany, who is from Kenya, ran her first professional marathon in 2010 (it just happened to be New York) and placed third. Since then, she has run it six times, winning four of those times and coming in second once, last year, to American Shalane Flanagan. Like I said: Legend

If I am 100% honest with you, I was rooting for Des Linden or Shalane Flanagan to win the New York Marathon this year. Flanagan won New York last year, and Linden won Boston this year in truly dramatic fashion. Des came in sixth, and Shalane came in third this year, beating her winning time of last year by about 28 seconds. But watching Mary Keitany run is a marvel.

The minute she drew away from the pack, you knew she was going to win. Keitany was conservative in her first 13-miles, running the second half of the race more quickly than the first. In fact, her latter half marathon was faster than the world record for the distance, set by American Molly Huddle (who finished in fourth place today). Mary Keitany is such a damn boss. — The New York Times

Sahle-Work Zewde & Meaza Ashenafi

Ethiopia just appointed a woman president. And then she appointed a woman as president of Ethiopia’s Supreme Court. Ethiopia also is close to a 50–50 gender split in the cabinet of the new Prime Minster, Abiy Ahmed. I am getting some seriously comforting vibes out of how this is all playing out in a country that has a history of being starkly patriarchal. If Ethiopia can come back from decades of famine to being named one of the world’s fastest-growing economies by the IMF, maybe the United States actually has a chance of making it through our current shitshow? — The Cut & Washington Post

Rihanna

Every time I think I’ve reached the apex of how much I love Rihanna, she goes and does something that makes me sit back and think omg ilysm Riri! Like, today, I was just going to post about how boldit was of Rihannato turn down the Super Bowl half-time show. She’s doing it out of respect for Colin Kaepernick and urrrrrrgh. That’s just the best! But then! As I was pulling this newsletter together Riri goes and a) Endorses Andrew Gillum for Florida governor and b) Announces that she’s going to make Ivanka’s Dad stop playing her music at his hate-filled rallies. New level of Rihanna fandom? Unlocked. — Vanity Fair

Glory Edim

I can’t remember when I first became aware of Well-Read Black Girl, but it feels like it was a long time ago (but it can’t be that long, because Edim only founded WRBG in 2015). Anyway. Watching the Well-Read Black Girl community grow and flourish and expand is so freaking awesome. Every time I get the newsletter I learn about a new author I need to read, or re-read, and that is such a delight. And now Edim is taking her empire wide with the first Well-Read Black Girl Fest and squeeee I’m just so excited for this amazing woman’s future! — The New York Times

Ina Garten

Okay, true confession time: I don’t actually have a woman crush on Ina Garten. Wait, no, that’s not true. I now have a woman crush on Ina Garten, but it’s not because of her cooking. It’s because of her disdain for Ivanka’s Dad. “Ina Garten, what would you serve President Trump?” beat “A subpeona.” BURN. So good, so cold, so succinct, so perfect. Do not get me wrong, I’ve always liked Ina Garten. Her food looks delicious, her lifestyle enviable, her relationship goals, I just was never fanatic about her. Well that’s over now. Ina Garten forever! — The Cut

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday

It’s almost here. Election Day, 2018. I know what I’m going to wear, I know where my polling place is. I know that I’m going to bring my son, just like I did in 2016. What I don’t know is if you are going to vote, too. Are you? Please tell me you will. Or that you already have. This is important. It’s important for me and for you. It’s important for our parents and our children. Whether you a child or not, someone you know someday will have a child and you will want the best for that child, and that is something you can start preparing now. We don’t own this world, but we can help shape the future. Vote like your life depends on it!
