Behind the code: Paulo Gaspar, Director of Engineering, PandaDoc

Here at PandaDoc, we strongly believe that it is our people that make our purpose. At the heart of our PandaDoc API are some amazing folks who quietly craft their magic, and ‘Behind the code’ is a series to learn a little about the lives of these wonderful people. The first in this series is our Director of Engineering — Paulo Gaspar.

Paulo loves the infinite possibilities in software programming and is constantly expanding his knowledge about computers, programming, and the internet. At age 12, mIRC scripting piqued Paulo’s interest in software programming. At age 15, he programmed his first game in Pascal.

​​Paulo earned his BS and MA degrees in computer and telecommunications engineering and his Ph.D. in computer science. One of his first positions was at an engineering institute developing software for biomedical research, mainly using Java and Python. He later helped develop a system to optimise genes; the resulting software became widely used in research worldwide. With the help of machine learning, Paulo created another system that analyzes human genes and identifies pathological mutations with high accuracy.

Before PandaDoc, Paulo started two tech companies. One of those built SaaS products to measure the real effect of influencer marketing campaigns, an exciting and multifaceted challenge that required developing both specialised algorithms to track sales, as well as creating scalable solutions to source large volumes of data from social networks and e-stores without compromising page performance.

Paulo believes success is driven by people and perseverance — while leveraging technology and innovation. He swears by the mantra that great API platforms are the ones that make it ridiculously simple for the user to get started and build solutions straightaway.

As Director of Engineering for the Ecosystem Track at PandaDoc, Paulo is excited to develop automation products, APIs, and integrations that enable the elimination of manual paperwork with an ecosystem of technologies that streamlines business tasks.

In his spare time, Paulo enjoys building things, from wood tables to robotic arms. He also enjoys playing squash and chess, and international travel.
