One of the things my country sells best is the illusion of a world-class education. People from all over the world send their children to boarding schools and universities here to take advantage of the prestige granted us by the British empire and the fact that Oxford University was founded at about the same time as the Aztec Empire.

In my somewhat eclectic mix of acquaintances, I have a Chinese friend, now doing performance arty things in New York and a Swiss socialite, investing in property here in London and ghostwriting novels. I am something of a class chameleon and as happy on council estates as I am in swanky central London wank-pads.

I am me. I have found that the Universe adjusts its expectations accordingly.

Both of these friends attended expensive boarding schools here in the UK — and the Swiss friend has availed herself of multiple Master’s degrees whilst engaging in numerous philanthropic exploits. She’s the most qualified unemployed person I know.

Other non-British friends of mine arrived for University. It’s not just them.
