Is George Orwell’s World Map Our Political Future?

George Orwell’s ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ is one of my favourite books across the entirety of the English literature canon; if you haven’t read it then check it out of your local library. If you no longer have a local library because of the continual hollowing out of public services by endless capitalism — go steal it from the bookshelves of someone richer than you.

Chances are, if they read Orwell, they probably won’t mind.

Nobody should ever be punished for stealing books to feed their intellectual curiosity. Plus, a book left on the shelf is intellectually dormant, not fulfilling its potential and should be liberated. Smart people should get used to giving books away to increase the total sum of human intelligence instead of hoarding vertical piles of them like intellectual dragons.

Have a root around their house for some Ray Bradbury too whilst you’re there. Take your time, no need to rush a burglary during the end of days.

In his book, Orwell gets a lot right about the here and now and I won’t ruin too much of the plot. Suffice it to say it’s a terrifyingly prescient view of the future…
