Spencer Nickless teaches Department of Labor Employment workshops for transitioning service members. With a background in education and human resources, she loves being able to use her skills within this career field. As a military spouse who experiences professional transition every three years, Spencer is able to use both her professional knowledge and personal insight to guide others through the process of career transition. She’s had the privilege of using her own struggles to help others. In Spencer’s experience, there has been nothing more satisfying than seeing her personal struggles morph into a truly fulfilling career that gives her the opportunity to impact the lives of others each and every day.

Spencer’s goal has always been to find that job - the one that will transfer anywhere at any time. She has a diverse experience; working in education, dental assisting, administration, and human resources. She’s learned to be adaptive to any situation she’s thrown into and has been able to take unrelated job experience to gain opportunities through bridging professional gaps. Unfortunately, employers don’t typically see the military spouse experience as diverse and marketable, but instead as spotty and concerning. Spencer is a firm believer that recruiters should see the military spouse title as an asset rather than a flaw based on their adaptive nature and diverse experience. To her, it’s not about finding a job to pass time until the next set of orders comes in, it’s about building a career.

In Her Words:

“When I read the [The Paradigm Switch] mission, I felt like someone was writing a letter specifically to me, explaining their plan to improve my personal situation. As military spouses, it is easy to lose our own identity. TPS has created a setting where individuals who have stepped backstage to support their husband’s or wife’s career can finally emerge into the spotlight. This is a forum to focus on YOU. Your professional background education, skills, ideas, and personal experiences are the focus. More than anything, TPS shows you that you are not alone. Coming to that realization through joining TPS is cause for celebration. We’re in this together!”
