“Mommy, I Can’t Sleep. A Strange Man Is Talking To Me.”
The terrifying ease with which baby monitors can be hacked
“Mommy,” my friend’s three-year-old daughter screamed at her, tears streaming down her face. “Mommy, I hear a voice in my room. It’s a strange man. He’s telling me to do things, bad things.”
My friend shoots bolt upright in her bed. It’s 3am. She turns on the light, wakes up her husband and rushes into her daughter’s room.
No one is there.
“Where is the sound coming from sweetie?” My friend asks her daughter, hoping it was just caused by a bad dream.
“There.” She points to the baby monitor sitting beside her bed. “The voice was from there.”
“Are you sure?” My friend asks her daughter. “It’s just a baby monitor.”
She nods, tears still streaming down her face.
They walk over to it together, the little girl, terrified, hiding behind her mom. My friend puts her face closer to the monitor, trying to inspect it.
“Boo.” The voice, deep, strange, and gravelly comes out of the monitor.
My friend jumps back in shock.
Her daughter screams and runs out of the room.
