More Than A Mother-Son Wedding Dance

What we learned about love and grace while stepping on each other's toes

To the wedding guests, the mother-son dance was our big moment.

But to me, it wasn’t about the performance — it was about everything that led us there.

Learning to dance was a great idea, even if there wasn’t much time to perfect our form. Which, in essence, sums up how we lived our lives — stepping on each other's toes, figuring stuff out, and making up the rest as we went.

But this was his wedding day.

All eyes will be on us during the mother-son dance. Without lessons and practice, there would be no hiding our clumsy and awkward steps for two and a half minutes. We were determined to look like we knew what we were doing on the dance floor. We wanted to make them ‘oooh and ahhh’ at us and maybe even wipe a few tears from their eyes. As much fun as we knew all that would be, the highlight wasn’t about us showing off on the dance floor in front of everyone. For me, the highlight was practicing to dance.

Amid the chaos that is wedding planning, the moments we had to practice became a space for me to reflect on the deep connection we have despite years of ‘stepping on each other's toes.’ There…
