Empowering Children Through Practical Freedom and Trust
Reflecting on my journey as a parent, I remember vividly the days when my toddlers were just starting to assert their independence. One effective method we explored was allowing “accidents” to happen during their transition out of diapers. When spills happened, I’d calmly say, “Uh-oh, it’s time to clean up,” handing them a rag and encouraging them to wipe up. Watching them tackle the cleanup, then scamper off proudly, was both heartwarming and reaffirming.
This approach — helping children to help themselves — is a core principle of the Montessori method, and it doesn’t just apply to toddlers.
As my children grew and their legs carried them confidently into new adventures, I found new ways to apply this principle. Like when they were eleven, and I first let them walk by themselves to a nearby babysitting class. Despite the safe neighborhood, my parent’s heart raced with every step they took away from home. But they managed beautifully, proving they were ready to navigate the world around them, distractions and all.
Letting go is never easy. It comes with a mix of pride and anxiety for every parent. But trusting our children with the freedom to explore, fail…
