Pete Hegseth’s nomination for Secretary of Defense has raised more eyebrows than a Botox convention. While some hail him as a “change agent,” critics see him as a walking, talking embodiment of everything wrong with the current political climate. He’s been accused of everything from sexual assault to excessive drinking, not to mention harboring controversial views about women in combat. His qualifications seem to boil down to “appearing on Fox News and owning boots,” which, shockingly, isn’t listed in the job description for the nation’s top defense position.

Rather than a champion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Hegseth’s critics are suggesting a more fitting acronym: DUI. His alleged penchant for alcohol has become a focal point, leading some to question whether his judgment is as clear as his supposed love for the military. Senator Mark Kelly even directly questioned Hegseth about these allegations during the confirmation hearing, forcing Hegseth to claim they are merely a “smear campaign.” The optics, however, aren’t great: a man potentially in charge of nuclear launch codes facing questions about his sobriety.
