The year is 2024. While historians still debate the relative merits of the Jonestown Kool-Aid and the Heaven’s Gate comet-watching parties, a new contender has emerged for the title of “Most Outlandish Cult in History”: the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. Forget the robes and the strange rituals; the MAGA cult’s power lies in its potent blend of unwavering devotion, questionable fashion choices, and a leader who seems to operate under the belief that reality is merely a suggestion.

Unlike traditional cults that hide in the shadows, the MAGA cult proudly parades its members in public, easily identifiable by their “Keep America Great” hats that ironically look more like they were sourced from a clearance bin at a Kmart than the pinnacle of American manufacturing. Their shared belief system revolves around a single charismatic figure — a man who once suggested injecting bleach to cure a global pandemic — who his followers see as a messianic figure capable of restoring America to its imagined past.

The rituals of the MAGA cult are as diverse as their beliefs: rallies that resemble more a pep rally than a political event, social media postings featuring memes that defy logic, and…
