A Natural Landscape

nighttime eventide
a beautiful, bold lake sleeps
the eagle watches

valley walls stand guard
where the Irish, green moss grows
dark timberland waits

nocturnal pond sings
beneath the skipping pebble
magical Autumn

This poem came from a series of images in a dream that the verse helped me make sense of. The dream seemed like a montage of photos capturing different features of the natural landscape, but they were all mixed up. One moment I was in the forest, the next seated by a pond, then soaring over a lake. Different views of these three types of natural feature kept repeating. The one thing that held constant was that it was late evening or night in each snapshot. I chose three verses each of which consist of a haiku to give the sense of the short glimpses of each image that the dream consisted of.
