There is a lot of angst among writers and other creatives about AI possibly replacing human artists. But even though AI continues to improve, I don’t think we’re in any imminent danger. Maybe I’m being naive and overly optimistic, but in my opinion, the human element wins out.

When I’ve pasted previously written articles into ChatGPT, AI has re-written some sentences, ostensibly for better clarity and flow, but my own voice and the nuances that make my writing distinctively mine are lost. The writing is less vibrant and more insipid, even while it is grammatically and structurally correct.

This isn’t to say we can’t use AI constructively. When I use it to help edit my own or another writer’s work, it can offer constructive suggestions that help pinpoint missing elements in a piece. This is similar to what a good editor does. An editor, or AI, can show us where transitions are too abrupt, ideas are too fuzzy, or digressions too much off topic.

To determine if my political essays or opinion pieces involving some research could be erroneously flagged as AI, I copied and pasted work into ChatGPT and asked for feedback. To my relief, ChatGPT responded that none of my content was AI-written. “All human written,” was the…
