In my part of the world, there are four distinct seasons. Each has its appeal, but to me, one stands out above the rest.
You can call it Autumn or Harvest, but I call it Fall. Fall is the best season, its not hard to prove.
This all started yesterday when I realized that we are two-thirds of the way through August and September is coming.
September is when Fall starts. If you are thinking, “like, duh”, I’m not talking about the 21st of September, I’m talking about September 1st.
If you are like me, Fall starts at the beginning of September and stays until you can't avoid Christmas anymore. It means that leaves are covering the ground and everything smells like pumpkin and spice.
It really is the best season. I’m not afraid to say it.
Perhaps you disagree. That’s okay. It’s likely you are just confused and perhaps you have forgotten all that Fall is.
Fall is a crisp, cool morning, where you can taste the fresh air.
It is long socks, scarves, and flannel.
It is cozy weather, for cozy people. It is for cuddling and being close.
Fall brings family fun.
With Fall comes Halloween. And Halloween is one of the best holidays. You eat candy and you carve pumpkins. You run through corn mazes and jump in piles of leaves.
It gets silly and you make memories. It is all the fun of Christmas without the pressure to buy presents. Plus, my kids are really damn cute in their costumes.
Another name for Fall is Harry Potter season… need I say more?
We watch all the Harry Potter movies every fall together. Me, my wife and our kids. It is a tradition and it is magical. Literally. We cuddle up and get lost.
Fall smells the best.
Cinnamon and apple pie. Burning firewood and pine needles. The scent of fall is intoxicating. It tells a story of good times to come.
Coffee is best in the fall.
A warm mug in your hand on a cool morning makes you feel safe and prepared for whatever the day holds. And don’t get me started on the flavors. I’m coming for you pumpkin spice latte.
The food feeds your soul.
Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, soup, and stew. Pie, cake and pumpkin everything. And it is so far away from new years that you are not afraid to eat all the unhealthy things. Guiltless indulgence in comfort food, ending with you stretched out on the couch is what Fall is all about.
But in all seriousness Fall does something to me.
I get to step away from the high activity of the past season. I can leave behind the busy lifestyle of Summer, where we maximized our time in the heat and sun. I can say goodbye to the cramming in of all the activities that we want to accomplish during the long days.
I can step back and breathe deep.
For me, it is the allure of slowing down and refreshing my life.
In fall everything resets. The kids go back to school and we return to a routine that makes sense. We slow down and enjoy the little things. The things that we already have. Each other.
So now I want to cuddle up with my dog and sip a cup of hot coffee while watching the rain pour outside. I want a baggy sweater and a good book. I want the changing colors and the cooling of my world. I want to relax and breathe deep.
I’m ready for fall. No other season can compare. Maybe you disagree. It’s okay for you to be wrong. I’m too relaxed to care.
