My neighbor, Crystal, hopes the Georgia senate passes a proposal that would prevent transgender girls from playing on school and college sports teams.

“It’s crazy to think girls can compete fairly against biological boys,” Crystal, who is the mother of two girls, said. “It might not matter when they are younger, but what about high school? A transgender girl would have a big advantage.”

But banning transgender girls from sports might be illegal. According to some lawmakers, a ban would violate President Biden’s recent Executive Order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identify. One federal judge has already blocked a similar Idaho law.

Under the Georgia bill, no public school or university, or private school which competes against public schools, can allow someone who was born a male to compete in sports that are designated for females only.

Georgia joins several other states in considering proposals that would ban transgender girls from playing on all-girl school and college sports teams, and the proposal has elicited strong emotions on both sides of the issue.
