How I Produce My Weekly Newsletter Consistently, Efficiently and Joyfully
It benefits me as much as my readers
I’ve been producing my weekly Substack newsletter consistently for just over a year at this point and it’s not always easy. But there are benefits, for me and my readers. Here’s what motivates me.
It helps me organise what I read
Each newsletter curates the best of what I’ve read that week on the topics of writing and publishing. Over the past year it’s become an archive of all the articles I loved and want to go back to.
I have other ways of organising these articles, in Notion for example. But I’ll literally go back over my own Substack publication regularly to re-read inspiring or useful pieces.
I create book chapters, week by week
Each newsletter is a potential book chapter in the book I’m working on right now. Tweaks will be needed, but knowing I’m building my next book week by week is motivating.
It also means that nothing is wasted. If I don’t get great open rates or interaction, I’ve still got a new chapter. On the other hand, I can also use engagement rates as feedback. If engagement is low, maybe that chapter needs more work.
