It’s a song going back to at least Walt Whitman: “New York isn’t New York anymore”.
I can imagine that greeting my great-grandfather when he got off the boat from Italy, 14 years old with $20 to his name and no English, so he wouldn’t have understood it anyway. I got it in stereo, hi-def, surround sound when I arrived in the city in 2000.
