Why Gavin Newsom’s Ban on Voter ID is Absurd

Making it illegal to require identification defies common sense and human nature.

The woman standing in front of me was perplexed and dismayed. “But I haven’t gotten my free clothes this month,” she protested.

I was the thrift shop manager at a community charity, and our clients could select free clothing once a month for their families. The charity also provided food, financial assistance, and a variety of educational classes. The money to fund our services came from donations and thrift store sales, which exceeded a million dollars a year. For the approximately 125 families a day who interviewed with our case workers, the charity was a godsend.

Some of our clients were homeless. Others were working families trying to make ends meet. Some were in the country illegally, and others had been U.S. citizens all their lives. We didn’t differentiate or discriminate. We were there to provide help for anyone in need.

Our big problem

But we ran into a big problem in the thrift store. Clients eligible for free clothing were listed in our files, and we accessed those files in a registry at the checkout counter.

When clients selected their clothing, they didn’t owe any money. We simply…
