Episode 17— The Gelatician
“I saw that the two businesses were not competing. They were thriving due to their unique flavours.”
I need to think a little if someone asked me how I know about Gelato. As someone who has grown up in Mysore it is almost taken for granted that we get authentic italian gelato which has been around for almost a decade now!
For those of you who do not know what a Gelato is, here is the Wiki extract (Picture above helps too :) )
Gelato is Italian ice cream. Gelato is made with a base of milk, cream, and sugar, and flavored with fruit and nut purees and other flavourings. It is generally lower in fat, but higher in sugar, than other styles of ice cream
I vividly remember my first visit to the place and was instantly hooked! Enough about my Gelato story, on to Ajay’s story.
After encountering Gelatos while on a work trip to Italy, Ajay was intrigued with how Gelatos were an integral part of Italian culture with every house hold serving up its own flavor.
Though his job at IBM involved a lot of glamours international travel, after 17 years of work, the urge to pursue an entrepreneurial venture got the better of Ajay and lead to opening Just Gelato. The premier and till this day the only Gelato store in the whole of Mysore which is pretty amazing!
A few of my favorite parts of the podcast where about —
- He started his own venture but took a few years for his business to stabilize before quitting his job.
- He strives to ensure that his customers always get value and that he always uses the best quality inputs for the Gelato.
- The tunnel vision he had when he thought about his happiness when deciding to take the plunge. We can only take care of others when we have first taken care of ourselves!
- His emphasis on a life well lived. At the end of the day, what matters is living life and being happy as per our own yardstick and not anyone elses’. What say? :)
