The new year is quickly approaching, but don’t wait until the clock strikes midnight on January 1 to start being motivated for the year ahead. With these five simple steps, use your old newspapers and magazines to create your own motivation collage. Out with the old; in with the new!

Step one: Find a wooden board, preferably from the craft section of a local store, in any size you want. Also gather old newspapers and magazines, scissors, tacky glue and/or a glue stick and a small paintbrush if you plan on using tacky glue.

Step two: Cut up various blocks of text from your old newspapers, being sure to vary the sizes so you end up with some larger clippings and some smaller clippings.

Step three: Using a paint brush, spread a thin layer of tacky glue across the board or use the glue stick and begin placing the newspaper clippings in various directions on the board to create a collage of newspaper clippings. Continue this step, layering clippings over each other if needed, until the entire board is covered with newspaper. Tip: Don’t be afraid to have some clippings hanging off the board. Once you’re finished, you can go back and cut off any excess newspaper around the edges.

Step four: Next, go through your old magazines and cut out any words or pictures that inspire or motivate you. This could be anything that catches your eye. Tip: Look for little blurbs of color that will provide a bright contrast from the black and white newspaper.

These blurbs were taken from Cosmopolitan magazine.

Step five: Once you’ve compiled the magazine clips you want to add to your board, figure out where you want to place them and then carefully glue them down with the tacky glue or glue stick. Tip: It may be best to do something minimal so as not to take away from the newspaper-clipping background. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s something you will enjoy looking at. This is your motivation collage, after all.

Just like that, you’ve found a new purpose for your old newspapers and magazines and already have a head start for your 2018 motivation. Hang it on the wall or set it on your desk so you can look at it whenever you need some inspiration. Good luck with your new year!
