Jurassic Park isn’t about dinosaurs
I don’t know about you, but I was really glad to see that Jurassic Park got added back to Netflix this week.
Based on the fact that it instantly jumped to the top ten and has stayed their ever since, a lot of other people were pretty excited about it too.
What’s interesting is that two sequels, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III landed on Netflix the same day and haven’t enjoyed the same popularity. The Lost World briefly cracked the top ten but quickly fell off.
That got me thinking: what makes Jurassic Park the best dinosaur movie ever made? After all, the sequels are newer, have more expensive special effects, and bigger stars.
Luckily, I got a key insight from K.M. Weiland’s fantastic book Creating Character Arcs which I developed to it’s logical conclusion: Jurassic Park isn’t about dinosaurs.
Sound crazy?
I don’t think so. Jurassic Park more than any other dinosaur movie tapped into classic principles of good storytelling, and if your interested to hear exactly what I mean, I just published a whole post on the topic as part of my ongoing fascination with what makes some stories so good. I hope you enjoy it:
