Within the last decade, what people pride themselves in has taken many turns. Some pride themselves on what they do for a career and others how they treat others. Some pride themselves on what possessions they own and others what they give. Some of their hometown sports team and others what video games they play. These days it seems that we as people pride ourselves in our political standing. Which, truly, is not a bad thing. Not at all. But, with all things, what it has become is different than what was intended. And it may not be for the best.

At the recent Obama foundation summit in Chicago, former president Barack Obama spoke out on the “Woke” culture. For those who have no idea what the term “woke” means here is a refresher in youth slang. The definition of “woke” is: being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice. -Dictionary.com

When The “Black Lives Matter” movement broke out the term became used heavily with Police brutality and what people deemed oppressive. So how does this relate to Barack Obama? In the Summit Barack Obama commented on our political culture. His words sparked many to think about how they take action with their standing and opinions. The former president said this:

“I get a sense among certain young people on social media that the way of making change is to be as judgemental as possible about other people.”

“If I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself because ‘Man did you see how woke I was? I called you out!”

“If all you’re doing is casting stones, you are probably not going to get that far.”

Youth around the country have taken a stand against different issues and have lead protests to try to make a change. But maybe the others actions taken to make a change are not effective. If we truly want to make a change for the b

etter, first we must not judge others. And on former president Obama’s words, think on them and find your own opinion on them. Do you think they are meant for runners of the upcoming election? Are they a stab at the youth? You guys can think on that for yourselves. This is The Perks of News.
