You Don’t Need To Drown In Your Emotions
I understand that sometimes you feel like you’re drowning
An anchor of responsibility, burden, and expectation wraps around your legs.
At first, you felt like you were above the water.
That you could bear the weight.
That you could handle the pain and the stress.
But at some point, the waves that you had looked down on began to lap over your head.
And your calm quickly turned into panic.
No longer looking upward, instead, you’ve focused your attention on the sharks swirling below you.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially when your focus changes.
Why?
You only get overwhelmed when you can’t see a way out.
When you become blinded by your situation.
But drowning is a choice.
The only difference between the you that is overwhelmed and the you who masters the waves lies in one question.
What are you putting first?
Often, when we become overwhelmed, we put our situation first.
We put the expectations of others on a pedestal.
We put the weight of our burdens on a pedestal.
We put the demands of our responsibilities on a pedestal.
Isn’t it ridiculous?
We attach these anchors to ourselves whilst attempting to swim to our purpose, then wonder why our situation gets us before we can get to our destination.
You put the wrong things first.
Putting something first means abandoning anything that hinders us from reaching that goal.
If the expectations of others, life-oriented burdens, or our responsibilities are first, guess what is getting sacrificed?
Your goals.
Your hopes and dreams.
Your purpose.
The destination.
However, if you put your purpose first, the first thing that would’ve been abandoned would be whatever is holding you back from reaching the destination.
The very anchor that dragged you below the waves.
That’s why drowning is a choice.
The anchors that are making life heavier than it needs to will be the reason you drown if you let them.
You must make a choice.
Choose what you put first, before your situation determines it for you.
As long as you put your purpose first.
You will never drown.
You will bear the weight.
You will conquer the pain and the stress.
You will never remain overwhelmed.
You will never be a victim to the waves or the sharks.
Start every single day by putting the things you must do first.
You will never be led astray.
Next time you feel the anchor pulling on your leg, ask yourself:
What am I putting first?
