Cyclists in Philadelphia rode their bicycles in honor of their friend. The men and women rode down the streets of center city in memory of Emily Fredricks, a 24-year-old who was killed in Philadelphia.

Fredricks was hit and killed by a garbage truck on Nov. 28 while riding her bicycle through the Spruce Street bicycle lane.

On Nov. 29, over 100 supporters of Fredricks created a barrier between the bike lane and passing traffic to honor their fellow rider.

“Emily C. Fredericks’ death is tragic, but it isn’t surprising to safe streets advocates,” Dena Driscoll said. Driscoll, a co-chair for the 5th Square political action committee and family biking advocate continued, “Not enough has been done to keep these bike lanes safe, and someone was bound to get hurt.”

The cyclists say that they are riding to send a message to Mayor Jim Kenney. “The city has demonstrated a lot of disregard for the cycling infrastructure in the city,” Alexandria Schneider of Cycle Scene PHL said. “We are here to remind the city that we are here, we are cyclists, we are worthy of protection.”

The ride took place on Dec. 3 down the Spruce and Pine Street Bike lanes where Fredricks was killed.
