A council met last night to vote on what has been a six year battle for the construction of a new ‘super Wawa’ in a local montgomery county borough. Members from the Conshohocken Borough Council met to vote on the building of a controversial Wawa on Fayette street where the Moore Chevrolet Dealership formerly stood. Narrowingly passing with a 4–3 vote sparked outrage by community members. Many citing traffic concerns while others simply opposed to the idea.

The vote comes after 29 public hearings over a six year span on the proposed Wawa. Ross Weiss, the developer of the project, insists the Wawa will improve the area. Weiss says, “This is a Wawa that will enhance an area that is not residential.” But members of the community at the hearing fought back. Many telling the council the building would bring chaos to their neighborhoods.

The new Wawa offers 19 fueling stations and would be open to customers 24/7. Residents opposed the idea with concerns for local small businesses, along with a fear of increased traffic in what has already proved to be a busy area. Many told Wawa representatives to “get out,” “go somewhere else,” and “nobody here wants you.”

Opponents of the vote left open the possibility of appealing, which would extend the already long battle.
