Myth №1: Philosophers believe that there is no right or wrong.

I’m an academic philosopher since a while now and it always surprises me what stubborn misconceptions there are about philosophers. In this post I debunk some of my favorites and speculate how people might have come to believe them in the first place. I hope you enjoy the philosophical ride.

Philosophers believe that there is no right or wrong view

As a philosopher, this one particularly bothers me. It’s a tenacious misunderstanding and one that shows many people have no idea what philosophy qua academic discipline is all about.

Philosophy is all about arguments, about giving reasons for why anyone should come to a particular conclusion.

Philosophers argue ALL THE TIME.

That is just the thing they do. They disagree on everything. They argue so much, if you attended a philosophy conference you’d be forgiven for thinking that every discipline but philosophy believes that truth is person-relative.
